By the end of the lesson you should have furthered your knowledge and understanding or skills of:
- the development indicators
- the differences between MDC's (More Developed Countries), NDC's (Newly Developed Countries) and LDC's (Less Developed Countries)
- using the development indicators to make comparisons between countries.
THE GAME
- Your teacher will give each group of 3 or 4 a set of flat cards, because of physical distancing rules you must nominate a member of the group to be the 'banker' of the cards
- The holder should 'deal' sets of cards for each player and these cards should remain in the control of the 'banker'. cards should remain flag-side down
- The player to the right of the 'banker' begins. The banker should reveal the country card (flag) of the player to the right who should call out one of the categories. The banker now reveals the cards of the other players.
- The other players should now search on the Padlet map who has the 'best indicator' (this should create some discussion in of itself!)
- The 'banker' should now place all of the cards from that round at the bottom of the pile of the player with the winning hand.
- The player with the winning hand continues to control the category calls until they lose and control changes to the next player.
- Any disagreements should be resolved by vote with the 'banker' breaking ties.
- Repeat until one player has all of the cards! They are the winner!
post game activities:
- Divide the cards into 3 groups; MDC's, NDC's, LDC's - Develop criteria for deciding whether a country is an MDC, NDC or LDC.
- How did you decide the groups, what criteria did you use to make the final decision (What seemed to be the most important criteria)?
- Are there any issues with using criteria like the ones you used? Were there, for example, conflicts between indicators when deciding which group to place them in? Were there disagreements in your groups?
- How useful are terms like MDC, NDC and LDC? Ask your teacher about other terms that have attempted to describe comparative development.
